Economic impact of nautical tourism activities

Sustainability in Marinas

Nautical tourism is a vital driver of economic development in European coastal and inland regions. It contributes significantly to the EU’s blue economy, sustaining a diverse ecosystem of services, enterprises, and employment. With over 6 million recreational boats and well over 10,000 marinas and yacht harbours across Europe, the sector supports an extensive network of SMEs, which altogether consists of 32,000 businesses and offers 280,000 jobs directly.

Marinas are more than docking sites—they are economic multipliers that attract tourism and stimulate local businesses, including hospitality, retail, and other touristic services.

Forward-thinking marina managers can harness this economic multiplier effect by strengthening partnerships with nearby businesses, enhancing the visitor experience, and promoting longer stays. This can also support year-round tourism, helping to balance seasonal demand and reduce the environmental impact of mass tourism. This should be taken to stakeholders, such as tourist boards, local and regional policy-makers and citizens.

Integrating nautical tourism into local and regional development plans can be transformative. Marinas that invest in modern and open infrastructure often trigger broader improvements in public amenities and property values, benefitting both tourists and residents. This can position marinas as pivotal assets in sustainable growth strategies.

Marina businesses are encouraged to explore avenues for upgrading their infrastructure—whether by installing alternative fuel options, desalination to reduce dependency on stretched water availability, enhancing climate resilience, or adopting energy-efficient technologies. Doing so not only future-proofs operations but aligns with increasing expectations from environmentally conscious boaters, residents and policymakers alike.

One recurring barrier is access to funding. However, examples abound of marina operators successfully leveraging both public and private investment to modernise facilities, adopt renewable energy solutions, and digitise services. Staying informed about funding opportunities—especially at the EU and national levels—can unlock new potential.

With 48 million Europeans engaging in water sports and recreational boating each year, the potential impact of marinas is immense. By rethinking their role within the broader tourism and economic landscape, marina operators can become central figures in delivering high-value, low-impact tourism experiences.
